AIDS 2012

Washington, D.C.
July 21, 2012

The AIDS 2012 International Leadership Summit on Housing – held July 21st at the Washington, DC offices of the World Bank – brought together 190 participants from 27 countries to discuss housing insecurity, poverty and other social drivers of the ongoing HIV pandemic. Leaders from UNAIDS, the World Bank and the International AIDS Society pledged concrete steps to place housing security on the global agenda to end AIDS. The Leadership Summit on Housing was convened by the National AIDS Housing Coalition (NAHC) and the Ontario HIV Treatment Network (OHTN), working in collaboration with the newly appointed UNAIDS Focal Point on Housing, and in consultation with a global planning group.

As explained by UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibe in his Summit remarks and again in his opening speech at AIDS 2012, "getting to zero" HIV infections and deaths will require action to address homelessness and housing insecurity among people living with HIV. Other Summit speakers included U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Shaun Donovan, World Bank Global HIV/AIDS Director David Wilson, Stephen Lewis of AIDS-Free World, International AIDS Society Executive Director Bertrand Audoin, and South Africa's Deputy Minister for Women, Children and People with Disabilities, Honorable Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu. Panelists from around the globe described housing barriers faced by persons living with HIV, innovative housing programs, and advocacy for housing as a basic human right.
